The average water bill for families has been rising over the last few years. Using less water is not only better for the environment, but it can be better for your finances too. If you want to lower your water bill at the same time as being more environmentally friendly, you can work to use less water in your home using some of these easy tips.

Store water

If you can store water for future use in a water tank or have a well drilled by adam drillers, then you can always have water at home. Water from a tank can be maintained at a set temperature, so you need less energy to bring it to temperature. A properly insulated tank can save you both energy and money, so you can use less water having to leave the tap running while waiting for the water to warm up.

Eat seasonally
A lot of water has to be used to rear animals who will be used for meat and dairy products, and to harvest a lot of crops. If you eat less meat and dairy products, you won’t be contributing to this large use of water. Eating less meat and dairy can also be good for your health and good for the environment. The meat and dairy industries are huge contributors to global warming, so using less is a good thing to do.

Eat vegetables that are in season. They need less water to be force grown than out-of-season fruits and vegetables, and you’re also lowering your carbon footprint by eating food that doesn’t need to be shipped in from long distances. Try to minimize food waste at home too. A lot of water is used to produce food, so you shouldn’t waste it by throwing out good food.

Steam your vegetables
Steaming rather than boiling vegetables uses a lot less water, and can also hold onto more of the flavor and nutrients in your food. If you do choose to boil your vegetables, save the water when you’re done and use it as a stock for soup or to water your plants.

Time your gardening right
The best time to water your plants is in the early morning or late evening. By watering at these times, the water you’ve used won’t immediately evaporate in the sunlight or the heat, meaning you need less water to soak the plants. Water the soil, and not the top of the plant, so the water will go straight down to the roots, where the plant needs it.

Saving water is an important thing that we all should make an effort to do. Reducing the water you use can help you be kinder to the planet, as well as saving you a lot of money on your water bills. Try to get the whole family involved in the effort to save water. Talk to your children about what you’re doing and why. Getting them involved can help them to begin to learn about living in a greener, more frugal way.
