Crime increases in the summer, especially against private citizens. You might feel comfortable with your current security, but you can get a more secure home this summer.

Install the best security you can afford

There is no doubt that the presence of an alarm deters some would-be thieves from trying to break into your home. There are, however, some control panels that are easily removed from the wall. Therefore, it is essential to install the most advanced
security alarm systems you can afford. And sign up for any extra security programs offered by your provider. Security programs provide extra protection by regularly calling to check if everything is secure. And advanced systems can connect directly to security centres with special response teams.

Put the dog to good use

A dog is great for deterring burglars since it will bark at the slightest noise outside. That will make a burglar change their mind and leave in no time. And bigger dogs are also known to attack burglars. While no one suggests you train your dog to be vicious, you can get security dog training, so your dog knows what to do in a situation. But if you can't get training, it's a good idea to place your dog's bed near an entry door. This ensures your dog is closer to the action and will be more alert. And sometimes, the sight of a dog is enough to put a burglar off.

Get a more secure home this Summer with smart tech

Smart video doorbells such as Ring from Amazon are excellent for security. Ring lets you see who is at your door via your smartphone or tablet. One study found that video doorbell technology decreased the chance of burglary by 50%. But video doorbells aren't the only tools you can access. Like
business security, it's straightforward to set up smart CCTV cameras in your home that connect to your phone. These are always on, and you can see them from anywhere in the world. Additionally, smart locks alert you if someone tries to open them.

Check your windows and doors

Many front doors are quickly forced open. uPVC doors aren't as strong as they appear and are a common entry point for burglars. Installation of a second door or an additional screen can work well. But a door made of stronger materials is a simple solution. Iron doors are extremely tough and come with superior locking mechanisms. The next best option to get into a house after a door is a window. Some criminals just break your windows. But many can be forced open like doors. A simple window catch prevents them from being opened from the outside.

Organize a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme

Together, we can make the world safer and more secure. Because of this, there have always been neighbourhood watch programs. Neighbourhood watch makes a huge difference in the summer
when crime increases. And it's an excellent way to catch up with your buddies. However, there might not be a neighbourhood watch in your area. But you can report suspicious activity on social media instantly, right from your phone. This way, you can inform your neighbours about recent crimes or suspicious activity. So spread the word and stay safe.

Summary

Securing your home is a task in itself. First, of course, always check your windows and doors. Still, new alarms and smart devices technologies provide an enhanced security system.

The chances are that you already have a gate for your home, fencing around your backyard and smoke alarms in the ceiling. Your home is your castle and it should be protected as such. You baby proof a house to keep the baby safe, so you have to remember to protect yourself and the rest of the family, too. Understanding the best way to make your home safe will ensure that you are managing your home properly and protecting your insurance, too.

Home protection is vital if you want to keep on top of your insurance and make sure that you are able to live in a safe house. From speaking to the inspectors about fire dampers in the house to testing the smoke alarms and changing the batteries, there are things that you can do to make your home as safe as possible. Below, we’ve put together a list of things that you can do to get on top of home safety.

  1. Keep up with the smoke alarms. We talked about smoke alarm safety, but you need to actually keep up with testing them. The fire brigade is great at helping with this and they can often come and make sure that your fire alarms are sorted for free. Most home fire deaths that occur happen because of smoke inhalation and not actual fire. If your smoke alarms are working, you can ensure that you are safe.
  2. Find the hazards. A risk assessment of the house is not a bad idea. Walking through your house and identifying the places you can trip and fall is smart. You can then fix these and not worry about you or any of your family getting hurt and needing to claim on your insurance. Falls can cause major issues at home and you want to avoid this as much as possible.
  3. Secure the cabinets. The bleach cupboards, the medicine cupboards and all poisons should be kept out of the reach of children and adults in your house. You need everyone to remain safe and if you know that your poisons are out of the way, the better!
  4. Are you smart? It’s a question you might find easy to answer, but what we mean is that you have to be smart in your home. You want to know the stove is off when you leave the kitchen and that you keep your glass dishes away from the edge of the units.
  5. Keep the family safe by water. Do you have a pool? How about a bathtub? You need to make sure that the whole house is aware of how to behave around water. If you have a pool, have a gate installed and make a point of keeping your kids away from all sources of water.
To continue to create a safe home, you should consider it much like you would a healthy lifestyle. You can only achieve a healthy life if you work on it, and you can only achieve a healthy home if you keep on top of it.
