You need to find one that works for you and lets you manage the entire project all in one place. You will find it so much easier to make sense of things when you have software like this, and it streamlines the whole process. It is far better than trying to think of everything in your head or on pieces of paper. The best project management software will let you do things like creating templates, tracking KPIs, resource management reports, budget tracking, and so on. 

If you want to get the most out of your next project, you really need to take a hands-on approach to project management. Start by outlining the goals and aims of the project, giving you KPIs to track. Ensure you have some software that you're comfortable using, and also work with a PMO to provide support. All of this should come together to help you achieve the most desirable outcome.
