So at the age of 33, I decided on a complete career change. From retail management to care working! Yeah I know big difference huh! Anyway, I quickly realised it definitely wasn't me, I gave it my all (2 weeks in fact!) And threw in the towel.. I was stuck and didn't know what to do.. I was genuinely worried, I had three children to feed and no income!
I reached out to a very good friend Chris Jaggs, and asked for his advice, luckily for me he got back to me straight away and mentored me from the very beginning. He gave me honest and practical advice and come up with many solutions and ideas to get me back on track. Even when I asked for advice at random times Chris came through for me time and time again making the whole process far more easier to bare. Not only did he support me but reading the positive memes and inspirational stories keep me going!
Luckily for me I managed to get back on my feet but will always remember how much Chris helped me through that difficult patch in my life and that I'll not only remember but always be thankful for. So thank you Chris!! oh and for anyone wondering, I ended up back in retail management..if the shoe fits and all that..
Having just turned 16 and received my National Insurance Number, I made it my duty to find a part time job as soon as possible. After handing out CV’s all over West London, I received one solitary phone call from The Entertainer Toy Shop in White City, Westfield London.
I remember being told to come in for an interview by Chris Jaggs that weekend. Chris himself interviewed me and from then I knew this would be someone I would love to work with. During the interview Chris made me feel comfortable and allowed me to come out of my shell through our lengthy conversation about our beloved Arsenal football club.
As soon as I started, Chris took me under his wing. Being the youngest employee at the store, many of the other staff dismissed me when I needed help, but not Chris. Chris had faith in me from the beginning and it was this faith, trust and guidance which allowed me to work 2 years with him at The Entertainer.
Chris’ nicknames for me such as ‘JT’ or the ‘next big thing’ made me feel like I was part of the team and made me believe that I had a bright future despite being on the receiving end of patronising comments and treatment from other senior members of staff. I am now studying Law at a Top 10 Russell Group University and I believe that Chris’ influence very much helped me to be where I am today. He’s desire to give me flexible hours allowed me to balance my sixth form work with paid work which enabled me to do very good in my a levels despite working through them. However more importantly Chris’ faith and belief in me during those two years gave me a new found confidence and self assurance that has given me the drive and belief that I can indeed be the next big thing in any field that I decided to go into.
I'm lucky enough to have met and known Chris in person during a former job of mine.
I am a firm believer that a true leader will always lead from the front and put themselves in the other workers shoes and that is exactly what Chris did in order to inspire others. It is with great thanks to Chris that I managed to leave a dead end job and become the successful Personal Trainer that I am today.
My confidence was low and I did not have much faith in myself. However due to Chris's motivation and encouragement I went on to complete further education where I was eventually awarded my certifications in Sport Science and a diploma in Personal Training. I now run my own Personal Training business (High Caliber Fitness) where I help and motivate people towards their fitness goals, whilst also rehabilitating the injured. None of this would have happened without the support of Learn Develop Live.
“Being in the same job for 12 years it’s hard to see a way out when you’ve hit a wall. I contacted Chris Jaggs after seeing he had been in a similar position a couple of years before. I needed to know if indeed there was light at the end of the tunnel.
Chris replied instantly he didn’t just throw motivational jargon at me, he was relatable and gave me the sound logic and advice I needed. During a time when I couldn’t talk to anyone else about this Chris made me realise what was really important.
I now plan to leave my career in the new year but more importantly Chris taught me to leave work at the door and truly value time with my family”
Not enough nice words to describe Chris!
I used to work with Chris up until about a year and a half ago. I met him as my module assessor when I first started at the company, then a few years later he was mentoring me so I could be a module assessor. Throughout my whole career at that company I would speak to Chris most weeks and he would always have something positive to say and would always help everyone if he could. He would be one of the first people I called for advice.
He helped with my confidence in going for new roles and projects while I was there. When I was feeling put out, frustrated and lacking in energy, I would speak to Chris and he would always be able to help me see positively and that whatever it was I was considering doing was worth going for.
I have spoken to Chris, even after we both left the company, about any new jobs or roles I have gone for before each of them and he still makes me feel that I should do what makes me happy – all the time, no matter what and to not worry about leaving a job or changing your life if it is something you’d like to do.
He made my decisions a lot easier to make, and he is right – I’ve never regretted any career changes I have made, and there have been a few since!
The bottom line: Chris is great at giving you confidence in yourself and he knows you have the ability to make your own happiness, sometimes you just need someone like him to tell you.
I won’t be going back to retail management I think that is something Chris and I both share!
"Since I started following 'Learn Develop Live' in September 2016, I have made some small changes but for me they have all been life changing.
Following 'Learn Develop Live' encouraged me to try for a new job position, I never would have believed before that I would have got interview for, let alone offered the position.
I am now Logistics Coordinator for a major freight forwarding company and my role deals predominantly with one major fashion house and shipping their goods all over the world. In more recent weeks I have started to take my health more seriously and the inspirational quotes I see daily from 'Learn Develop Live' encourage me to stick with it.
I'm making healthier choices and I feel great in myself, so thank you 'Learn Develop Live' for all your inspiration and encouragement when I have needed it."
